Disorders Treated- Couples Problems

Couples Therapy

Healthy romantic relationships can be the greatest sources of support and satisfaction, while unhealthy partnerships, marriages, and divorces can result in high levels of stress, anxiety, depression, and worry.

A number of variables need to be examined:

  • 1) Effective communication

  • 2) Sexual satisfaction & compatibility

  • 3) Financial security

  • 4) Managing anger, jealousy, and anxiety

  • 5) Division of labor

  • 6) Decision & Power sharing

  • 7) Coping with other family members

  • 8) Value clarification, compatibility, and evolution

Couples bring both partners strengths and weaknesses to the relationship, which when properly understood, enables each individual to benefit. Likewise, improper understanding and unhealthy behaviors may negatively affect each member.  There is evidence that depressive symptoms in one partner can in fact "depress" the other partner.  Fortunately, there is evidence that not only individual psychotherapy can treat depression, but depression can be treated by cognitive therapy for couples, Integrative Couples Therapy, or Behavioral Marital Therapy (BMT).
